Summer 2012

No sign of financial and economic crisis by foreign tourists in Barcelona. They come in crowds from all over the world and enjoy a great holiday in Barcelona and the nearby beaches in the area and on the offshore Balearic Islands. Saving costs are well anywhere in peoples mind but not regarding the own vacation budget! The tourists finally had enough of the wet and cold summer in the northern hemisphere.

Also interesting is the fact that many tourists from the countries of the former Soviet Union have discovered the sunny Spain for itself as a tourist destination. True to this motto, our airlines-correspondent, Andreas Schmucki, made his way to Barcelona airport to catch the colorful airliner with his camera.

El Prat

The Barcelona airport also called “El Pratt” lies some 15 km. southwest of Barcelona. With more than 34 million passengers (2011), he is behind the Madrid Barajas Airport the second largest airport in Spain. He serves as a hub for Air Nostrum, Ryanair and Vueling and counted in 2008 for the first time more than 30 million passengers.

The first asphalt runway was built in 1948 and in the same year, the inclusion of the intercontinental transport was carried out by Pan Am. The airport was then further developed and the opening of the second runway took place in 1952. After the first time in history, 1963 more than 1 million passengers were handled. In 1970 like a half a year ago in Frankfurt, the first Pan Am Boeing 747 from New York (JFK) was landing in Barcelona.

There were further expansion be made beforehand of the Olympic Summer Games in 1992, and especially in the first decade of the 21st Century, when the third runway and a completely new terminal (now T 1), southwest of the existing one (now T2), emerged.
