Fighter Town

This year there were found significantly less fighter planes at RAF Fairford then the years before. It used to be a rendezvous of all NATO fighter-jets, but 2012, only a few F-16, MIG-29 and Tornados were present.

Historic planes

Slightly lost where a few historic aircrafts at Fairford. With the Battle of Britain Flight (Avro Lancaster and two Spitfires) only a few venture into the air. The other participants were a Hawker Hunter and a BAC Strikemaster but they could only be admired in the exhibition.

Civil aviation

Oops; you have to get used to it, to see civil aircrafts on a military air show. Maybe they got lost or just didn’t recognize it was a military event?
Certainly the most interesting guests included a Boeing 757 and 767 of DHL in their striking, yellow painting scheme, during their flyby of the gray skies over southern England.

Aerobatic Teams

Of course, the Red Arrows were at the air show too. Some other teams, however, were a surprise. Al Fusan from Abu Dhabi offered on their Aeromacchi an impressive show. Unmistakable was the fact that they are coached and trained by the Frecce Tricolori. The team has only existed for two years.
Another innovation was the Korean team "Black Eagles" on their T-50B jet trainers. The Black Eagles made 2012 a European tour and visited various air shows. The flight demonstration of the Eagles was one of the best we've ever seen. A superbly choreographed program with tight formations and plenty of action surprised the thousands of visitors. Consequently, they have been awarded for the best performance in 2012 with the King Hussein Memorial Sword. The Royal Jordanian Falcons and the Patrouille Suisse were other teams who were present. Unfortunately on short notice the Royal Saudi team with their Hawks had to depart back home.

Surely the editorial-team of WINGS-AVIATION will be back again. But this will probably in a few years’ time the case, should the Air Tattoo still going on. However, we would recommend a visit to all of our readers in southern England at RAF Air Tattoo in Fairford.
The next Royal International Air Tattoo will open its doors on 20th & 21st July 2013. A special thanks goes to our host mother in Lechade, Emma Horner, who has provided us every day with packed lunches for that big air show.
