Wie viele andere Gebirgsflugplätze wurde auch St. Stephan während des Krieges erbaut. Der Bau begann 1941 und wurde 1942 fertig, damals noch mit einer Graspiste. 1943 wurde eine 900m lange Betonpiste angelegt. Mit der Einführung von Düsenflugzeugen in der Luftwaffe wurde in St. Stephan der Betrieb voll aufgenommen. Im Jahr 1954 wurde die Piste auf 1'500m und 1957 auf 2'000m verlängert. Später wurden auch noch gepanzerte Flugzeugunterstände gebaut, welche es erlaubten, auch den Hawker Hunter auf dem Flugplatz zu stationieren.
Mit der Ausserdienststellung der Hunter blieb nur noch eine Leichtfliegerabteilung auf dem Flugplatz, welche Ende der Neunzigerjahre abgezogen wurde. St. Stephan ist aber auch die Heimat des bekannten weissen Papyrus Hunters welcher den vier Gemeinden im Tal gemeinschaftlich gehört.
Einmal im Jahr, im August findet in St. Stephan das Flugplatzfest statt. Aus diesem Anlass treffen viele historische Flugzeuge ein, welche vorfliegen oder teilweise auch Passagierflüge unternehmen. Man muss speziell darauf hinweisen, dass es sich nicht um eine Airshow handelt!
Trotzdem ist die Veranstaltung meiner Meinung nach besser als manche «richtige» Airshow. Alles ist sehr informal ohne striktes Programm und ohne Eintrittsgeld. Man kann sehr nahe an die Rollwege gelangen um Bilder zu machen. Da die gesamte Länge der Piste zugänglich ist, gibt es auch nirgends ein Gedränge.

Dieses Jahr war etwas speziell, weil eine Vorführung der Patrouille Suisse bewilligt wurde. Diese fand am Nachmittag statt. Wegen der Enge des Tals mussten sie ihre Darbietung etwas ändern da einige der Figuren nicht gezeigt werden konnten. Der Höhepunkt war natürlich die Formation zusammen mit dem Papyrus Hunter.
Um einen Einblick in die Zwanglosigkeit des Anlasses zu geben sind die Bilder in der Reihenfolge ihrer Aufnahme abgebildet. Dies ist eine Veranstaltung, welche ein Besuch wert ist. Der Zweck der Veranstaltung besteht darin, einen Teil der Kosten für Unterhalt und Flug des Papyrus Hunters zu erwirtschaften. Also ist es eine gute Idee ich in einem der Restaurationsbetriebe zu verpflegen und etwas Geld auszugeben.
