Mini Wars

This was probably the most striking feature of the airshow. It started with two Hawks doing reconnaissance and ground attacks. Special forces were then parachuted in with their full gear. Meanwhile a Rooivalk was doing ground attack runs. A C-130 then did a lowlevel parachute drop using the old bell type parachutes. I have never seen this done at another airshow. A Case 212 then did an airdrop of supplies while in a steep climb.

Oryx helicopters airlifted more troops in and also did abseil them. At the end the helicopters fetched the troops again and showed how to extract them on a long rope when they can’t land, or with a winch in the case of the Agusta 109. This was easily the most exciting part as far as the audience was concerned, if the exited cries and applause was anything to go by.

Little Annie

Little Annie 5After an epic journey from Siberia to South Africa, this Antonov An-2 is now used to give air experience flights to underprivileged children across the country. The name “Little Annie” is derived from the Russian name of Anouska or Ann, the name applied to the aircraft in Russia.

Aero L-29 Delfin & Car drop

The L-29 Delfin flown by Lt Col Glen Warden in a spurious Russian tiger scheme. All of a sudden there was an announcement on the speakers asking the owner of a Volvo car to remove it as it obstructed the airshows proceedings. The next thing was the Volvo hanging underneath a Puma and the announcement that it will be moved to the northern car park. The next announcement was that the car park is full and they then just dropped the car to the ground.

Boeing Stearman

Ivan van der Schaar had his first flight at the age of 11. He then decided to learn to fly. He paid for his flying lessons by cleaning aircraft at the local airfield and in return got his flying lessons. He soloed at 17 and later started flying with Comair after getting his commercial licence. In addition he is also flying for the Harvard Club.

SAAF Helis

The Air Force took the opportunity to display all their current helicopters to the public. Special attention was given to the locally developed and manufactured Rooivalk. Maj. Dempsey who recently soloed as the first female Rooivalk pilot gave the commentary.
