After two hectic days and successful business in the German capital, most of my colleagues left back home for Switzerland. Now planned for a long time I wanted to visit the famous and impressive military history museum at the former airport Berlin-Gatow.
Not an easy task
as it turned out later!
Whether it is worthwhile to take the arduous journey to the Air Force Museum under my feet’s, I did not know at that time. The walk was difficult, I knew that in advance!

Taking the Metro No. 2, it went from the Oranienburger Strasse to the Friedrichstrasse station. Past the "Palace of Tears" I reached the train No. 5. On Savyni Square I switched to the X34 bus-line. On the upper-deck of the bus, I was approached by a passenger and we lead a lively discussion all the long way to Gatow.

My fellow traveler was very well educated, and told me at almost every bus station the habits and specials of the habitants in Berlin. He had been a teacher for a long time, but several setbacks in his live made him almost homeless and without a job. Since awhile he is looking after his ill father as well.
Our bus arrived after a long drive in Kladow. My companion had informed me that the airport was not in Gatow itself, but rather in Kladow. After a few more minutes by another bus-line and a walk of approximated one mile, I reach finally the museum.

1. und 2. Weltkrieg

The museum is very large because most aircraft / helicopters are generously parked on the ramp. Similar to an air show, the aircrafts are placed in long rows. Absolutely ideal for photography, but the aircrafts suffer greatly from the weather-related conditions and look anything but new to me. As usual, the big brush is brought out from time to time and had been whitewashed one or the other aircraft. The painting was then not much more to do with how this airplane looked during his service.

Former NVA

Only to the efforts of Günter Schabovski, the large inventory of the Air Force Museum in Gatow has survived the former NVA of the GDR. In his well-known speech during a final conference of the GDR at 9th November 1989 the GDR finally collapsed and the hated “Berlin Wall” was soon history and gave the citizens of the former GDR, the freedom.
In addition to numerous MiG's and Sukhoi's the museum also has a larger collection of Mil-8 and Mil-24 helicopters, as well as several training aircraft of the type’s Aero Dolphin and Albatross.
