The museum was officially opened in April 1973 on the site of the Winthorpe Showground. Five years later it moved to the present location on the south east side of the showground.  In 1983 the Vulcan now on display actually landed on the old runway and was moved to it’s present location in the museum. This took the efforts of all the members of the museum.

After fundraising the first aircraft display hall was completed in 1990 which could accommodate some of the more rare and valuable aircraft. In 1995 the museum managed to aquire some land adjacent to the museum for further expansion.

In 2003 the museum was granted £453,000 from the lottery fund and building of a second hangar was started. This was completed the following year and some more aircraft could be moved into it to protect them from the weather. Quite many significant aircraft remain outside however and it is hoped that they can all be under cover one day which in the case of the Vulcan would need a substantial building.

Besides a big collection of aircraft there are also numerous aero engines, missiles and other items on display. The museum shop is surprisingly well stocked with books and models which could be the envy of many a model shop.

If you are in the vicinity of Newark the museum is well worth a visit, for which you should allow half a day if you plan to have a good look around all the exhibits. The museum is also hosting several events a year that can be checked at its website www.newarkairmuseum.org.
