Air Power from the Sea ist der Claim des Museums der Fleet Air Arm in Yeovilton. Das Museum gehört u den besten die wir je gesehen haben. Das Redaktionsteam um Urs Schnyder und Michael E. Fader hat das Museum in den letzten Jahrzehnten öfters besucht. Schon dieser Umstand zeigt, dass es sich um eines der wirklich sehenswerten Museen der Welt handelt. Das
Museum zeigt die Geschichte der Royal Navy resp. der Fleet Air Arm auf.
Von den ersten zerbrechlichen Flugzeugen wie die Short S27 über die
Sopwith Pub zu den modernen Jägern wie die Hawker Harrier FRS2. Die
Fleet Air Arm war richtungweisend in der Entwicklung der Flugzeuge ab
Schiffen und vor allem im Bau der Flugzeugträger. Heute unterhält die
einstmals grosse Fleet Air Arm mit der HMS Ocean nur noch einen
Hubschrauberträger. Gänzlich verschwunden sind die Flächenflugzeuge aus
dem Inventar der FAA. |
