The North American Rockwell
OV-10 Bronco is an American twin-turboprop light attack and observation
aircraft. It was developed in the 1960s as a special aircraft for
counter-insurgency (COIN) combat, and one of its primary missions was as
a forward air control (FAC) aircraft. It can carry up to 1,450 kg of
external munitions and internal loads such as paratroopers or stretchers,
and can loiter for three or more hours.
A specification for the Light Armed Reconnaissance Aircraft (LARA) was
approved by the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Army and was issued in late
1963. The LARA requirement was based on a perceived need for a new type
of "jungle fighting" versatile light attack and observation aircraft.
Existing military aircraft in the observation role, such as the Cessna
O-1 Bird Dog and O-2 Skymaster, were perceived as obsolescent, with too
slow a speed and too small a load capacity for this flexible role.
In August 1964, the NA-300 was selected. A contract for seven prototype
aircraft was issued in October 1964. The Bronco started flying midway
through the Charger's test program on 16 July 1965, and became one of
the premier counter-insurgency (COIN) aircraft of the next 30 years. |

The first 16 OV-10C Bronco where ordered in 1970 and delivered in 1971 to the RTAF. The planes where
shipped on board the USS Okinawa in June 1971 to Cam Ranh Bay (Vietnam) and
then flown to Thailand. The 21 Sqn. 2. Wing in RTAFB Lopburi was
the first user of the Borocos.
..
The 2nd Batch of 16 OV-10C was delivered by air across the
Pacific by Skyways on 8. December 1974 and stationed at 53 Sqn.
5. Wing RTAFB Prachuab Khirikhan.
..
At this time (1975) the war against communist in the North and North-East of
Thailand was at the peak, therefore many OV-10 were sent to airbases in the
North and North-East. On 1. October 1977, all Lopburi's
OV-10C were transferred to Chiang Mai to set a new attack Sqn. there as 411
Sqn, 41 Wing.
In 1982, the RTAF set a new air wing at
Surat Thani, therefore the OV-10C from the 53 Sqn. were transferred to the
new Wing at Surat Thani. This new set up Sqn. is called as 711Sqn. 71Wing.
Their task was to protect Thai fishery and destroy communist target in the
South.
..
On the 24 September 1991 the RTAF made a reorganization. The 711 Sqn became an F-5E Tiger II Sqn. The Broncos from the 711 Sqn had to join
the 411 Sqn. at Chiang Mai. All OV-10C Broncos where withdrawn from service
on 7. April 2004.
..
8 surplus OV-10C were given to the Philippines AF and 9 will be kept in
Thailand ( 3 - Tango Sqd, 1 - RTAF Museum, 1 - Lop Buri, 1 – Prachuab
Khirikahn, 1 – Surat Thani and 1 - Chiang Mai)

Die
ersten 16 OV-10C Broncos wurden 1970 be-stellt und 1971 an die RTAF
geliefert.
Geschwader in RTAFB Prachuab Khirikhan stationiert.
Staffel in Chiang Mai angegeben. Alle OV-10C Broncos wurden am 7. April
2004 ausser Dienst gestellt.
8 überzählige OV-10C wurden an die Philippinen abgegeben. 9 Maschinen
verbleiben in Thailand (3 - Tango-Staffel, 1 - RTAF Museum, 1 - Lop Buri, 1 – Prachuab
Khirikahn, 1 – Surat Thani and 1 - Chiang Mai)
