The Boeing Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight is a medium-lift tandem-rotor transport helicopter powered by twin turboshaft aircraft engines designed by Vertol and manufactured by Boeing Vertol following Vertol's acquisition by Boeing.

Development of the Sea Knight, which was originally designated by the firm as the Vertol Model 107, commenced during 1956. It was envisioned as a successor to the first generation of rotorcraft, such as the H-21 "Flying Banana", that had been powered by piston engines; in its place, the V-107 made use of the emergent turboshaft engine. On 22 April 1958, the V-107 prototype performed its maiden flight.

During 1961, the U.S. Marine Corps, who had been studying its requirements for a medium-lift, twin-turbine troop/cargo assault helicopter, selected Boeing Vertol's model 107M as the basis from which to manufacture a suitable rotorcraft to meet their needs. Known colloquially as the "Phrog" and formally as the "Sea Knight", it was operated across all U.S. Marine Corps' operational environments between its introduction during the Vietnam War and its frontline retirement during 2014.

Die Entwicklung der Sea Knight, die ursprünglich von der Firma als Vertol Model 107 bezeichnet wurde, begann 1956. Sie wurde als Nachfolger der ersten Generation von Hubschraubern, wie der H-21 "Flying Banana" gedacht die durch Kolben-motoren angetrieben waren. An seiner Stelle nutze die V-107 den Turbowellenmotor. Am 22. April 1958 absolvierte der V-107-Prototyp seinen Jung-fernflug.
Im Jahr 1961 wählte das U.S. Marine Corps, das seine Anforderungen für einen Kampfhubschrauber mit Zwillingsturbinen mittlerer Geschwindigkeit untersucht hatte, das Modell 107M von Boeing Vertol als Grundlage für die Herstellung eines geeigneten Hubschraubers für ihre Bedürfnisse. Umgangssprachlich als "Phrog" und formal als "Sea Knight" bekannt, wurde. Er wurde in allen Einsatzgebieten des U.S. Marine Corps zwischen seiner Einführung während des Vietnamkrieges und seinem Rückzug aus dem Dienst im Jahr 2014 eingesetzt.

Operational history

Einsatzgeschichte

 

 In 1963, the Royal Thai Army acquired three Kawasaki KV-107 IIs as VIP helicopters for the royal family. In 1964, another aircraft, the KV107/II-7 #4012, was acquired. This aircraft was previously used by the state lottery and the Office of the Prime Minister. After being handed over to the RTA, it was used exclusively for Pra Somdet Ya, the mother of King Rama IX. The aircraft were sold in 1976.   1963 erwarb die Royal Thai Army drei Kawasaki KV-107 II als VIP Hubschrauber für die königliche Familie. 1964 wurde eine weitere Maschine die KV107/II-7 #4012 erworben. Diese Maschine wurde früher von der staatlichen Lotterie und dem Office of Prime Minister verwendet. Nach der Übergabe an die RTA wurde sie ausschliesslich für Pra Somdet Ya die Mutter des Königs Rama IX verwendet. 1976 wurden die Maschinen verkauft.
