The Douglas C-47 Skytrain or Dakota (RAF designation) is a military transport aircraft developed from the civilian Douglas DC-3 airliner. It was used extensively by the Allies during World War II and remains in front line service with various military operators.
Die Douglas C-47 Skytrain oder Dakota (RAF-Bezeichnung) ist ein militärisches Transportflugzeug, das aus dem zivilen Douglas DC-3 Airliner entwickelt wurde. Operational history
Einsatzgeschichte
The RAF Transport Command was supplied with over 1,900 Dakotas under Lend-Lease during World War II and the type was flown by at least 46 operational squadrons, plus numerous support units. The RAF flew 50 Dakota I (C-47), 9 Dakota II (C-53), 962 Dakota III (C-47A) and 896 Dakota IV (C-47B). RAF Dakotas were assigned to all theatres of operations. RAF Dakotas dropped paratroopers and equipment and towed gliders to the Normandy landings and Arnhem. Four squadrons of Dakota IVs took part in the Berlin Airlift in 1948/49.
Das RAF Transport Command erhielt während des Zweiten Weltkrieges über 1.900 Dakotas unter Lend-Lease geliefert und der Typ wurde von mindestens 46 operativen Staffeln geflogen, plus zahlreiche Untersützungseinheiten. Die RAF flog 50 Dakota I (C-47), 9 Dakota II (C-53), 962 Dakota III (C-47A) und 896 Dakota IV (C-47B). RAF Dakotas wurden allen Operationsbereichen zugeordnet. RAF Dakotas brachten Fallschirmjäger und Ausrüstung und schleppte Segelflugzeuge zu den Landungen der Normandie und Arnhem. Vier Staffeln von Dakota IVs nahmen 1948/49 an der Berliner Luftbrücke teil.
