Development

Entwicklung

Boeing developed the aircraft as a private venture to replace the Boeing F3B- and Boeing F2B- with the US Navy, the first flight of the F4B- took place on June 25, 1928. The new aircraft was smaller, lighter and more agile than the ones it replaced but still used the Wasp engine of the F3B. This resulted in a higher top speed and overall better performance. As result of Navy evaluation 27 were ordered as the F4B-1.  Production of all variants totalled 586.

Operational history

Einsatzgeschichte

27 F4B-1 models were produced for the U.S. Navy and featured a bomb rack under the fuselage.F4B-2 utilized the spread-bar landing gear arrangement with tail wheel and 46 of the type were completed. F4B-3 was the F4B-2 though with a semi-monocoque structure and 21 were produced. The F4B-4 was the F4B-3 with new tail fin design, the R-1340-16 engine of 550 horsepower and provision for bombs. Some of these also featured stowage for an onboard life raft.

The U.S. Marine Corps also made use of the F4B- platform through 22 planes of the F4B-4.

The F4B- retained a relatively long service life considering the aviation advancements made throughout the 1930s and 1940s.
