The XP4Y-1 was a new flying boat design started in 1938, intended for both military and commercial use. The aircraft was of all-metal construction with a high-mounted, high aspect ratio cantilever monoplane wing (the Davis wing, which was later used in the B-24 Liberator) and an upswept aft fuselage with a tail unit with twin endplate fins and rudders. Only one was built and a production order for 200 was cancelled. The prototype first flew on 5 May 1939, demonstrating excellent performance.
A production order for 200 P4Y-1 was placed in October 1942, with a new aircraft plant which had been constructed at New Orleans, Louisiana to build the aircraft. Delays in preparation of the prototype and the shortage of Wright Duplex Cyclone engines (which were required to power the B-29 Superfortress) led to the production order being cancelled, with the factory being used to build the PBY- Catalina, instead. |

Die XP4Y-1 war 1938 ein neues Flugboot-Design das sowohl für militärische und kommerzielle Nutzung bestimmt war. Das Flugzeug war eine Ganzmetallkonstruktion mit einem oben ange-brachten Flügel mit grosser Streckung (Davis Flügel, der später in der B-24 Liberator verwendet wurde) und einer hochgezogenen hinteren Rumpf mit einem Doppelleitwerk mit Rudern. Nur eine Maschinen wurde gebaut und ein Serienauftrag für 200 wurde zurückgezogen. Der Prototyp flog erst-mals am 5. Mai 1939, und zeigte ausgezeichnete Flugeigenschaften. Der Serienauftrag für 200 P4Y-1 wurde im Oktober 1942 erteilt. Die Maschinen sollten einem neuen Flugzeugwerk in New Orleans, Louisiana gebaut werden. Verzögerungen bei der Herstellung der Prototypen und der Mangel an Wright Cyclone Duplex-Motoren (die für die B29 Superfortress erf-orderlich waren) führten dazu dass der Serien-auftrag zurückgezogen wurde. Die Fabrik wurde dann verwendet um die PBY- Catalina zu bauen. |
