The airframe bearing BuAer A-8847 began as the first of a group of three Curtiss XF8C-8 twinn-seat fighers. Orginally constructed with a Wright R-1510 14 cylinder radial, A-8847 was slated to recceive a Wright R-1820 Cyclone and became the XF10C-1 and was to serve as the prototype of a new Helldiver series. However, the Navy's sudden lack of interest in two-seat fighters brought about a designation change to XS3C-1.
Die Maschine mit der Seriennummer A-8847 begann als eine von drei Curtiss XF8C-8 doppelsitzigen Jägern. Anfangs mit einem 14-Zylinder Wright R-1510 Motor ausgerüstet bekam die Maschine einen Wright R-1820 Cyclone Motor und wurde XF10C-1 und diente als Prototyp der neuen Helldiver Serie. Doch durch das plötzliche Desinteresse der Navy an zweisitzigen Jagt-flugzeugen änderte sich die Bezeichnung in XS3C-1.
