The Curtiss N-9 was a float plane variant of the Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" military trainer used during World War I by the U.S. Navy. As a seaplane, the N-9 was equipped with a single central pontoon mounted under the fuselage. A small float was fitted under each wingtip. The wingspan was stretched an additional three meters, the fuselage was lengthened, the tail surfaces were enlarged, and stabilizing fins were added on top of the upper wing. The N-9 was initially powered by a 100 hp Curtiss OXX-6 engine. It quickly became apparent that the aircraft was underpowered, so Curtiss replaced the engine with a 150 hp Hispano-Suiza. A total of 529 N-9s were built during World War I, most of which were "H" models. Only 100 were actually built by Curtiss. Most were built under license by the Burgess Company of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Fifty others were assembled after the war, from spare components and engines by the U.S. Navy at NAS Pensacola in Florida. |
Die Curtiss N-9 war eine Wasserflugzeug Variante der U.S. Navy des Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" Trainers während dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Als Wasserflugzeug hatte die N-9 einen einzigen zentralen Ponton unter dem Rumpf. Kleine Stützschwimmer wurden unter jeder Flügelspitze montiert. Die Flügelspannweite wurde weitere drei Meter gestreckt und der Rumpf wurde verlängert, die Heckflächen wurden vergrößert, auf der Oberseite des oberen Flügels wurden Stabilisierungsflossen angebracht. Die N-9 wurde zunächst von einem 100 PS Curtiss OXX-6-Motor angetrieben. Es wurde schnell klar, dass das Flugzeug zu schwach motorisiert war, so ersetzte Curtiss den Motor mit einem 150 PS Hispano-Suiza. Gesamthaft wurden im Ersten Weltkrieg 529 N-9 gebaut, von denen die meisten "H" Modelle waren. Nur 100 wurden tatsächlich von Curtiss gebaut. Die meisten wurden in Lizenz von der Firma Burgess von Marblehead, Massachusetts gebaut. Fünfzig andere wurden nach dem Krieg , aus Ersatzteile und Motoren von der US Navy in NAS Pensacola in Florida zusammengebaut. |

Over 2,500 U.S. Navy pilots received their seaplane training in N-9s. Besides this primary role, though, the aircraft was also used to help develop shipborne aircraft operations during World War I, especially the development of ship-mounted launch catapults. The U.S. Navy retired the N-9s in 1927 as more modern trainers became available. |

Über 2.500 U.S. Navy Piloten erhielten ihre Ausbildung auf dem N-9 Wasserflugzeug. Neben dieser Hauptaufgabe als Trainingsmaschine, wurde das Flugzeug auch für die Entwicklung von Bordflugzeugen von Schiffen im Ersten Weltkrieg verwendet, speziell von Katapultstarts. 1927 als bessere Trainingsmaschinen zur Verfügung standen wurde die N-9 aus dem Dienst genommen. |
