The Curtiss R3C was an American racing aircraft which was built to join the Schneider Trophy.It was a single-seat biplane with two floats the built by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company Incor-porated. Two planes were built for the U.S. Navy (BuAer. 6978 and 6979), another one (BuAer. 7054) was ordered by the US Army Air Service. |
Die Curtiss R3C- war ein US-amerikanisches Wasserflugzeug, das zur Teilnahme an der Schneider-Trophy gebaut wurde. Es handelte sich um einen einsitzigen Doppeldecker mit zwei Schwimmern des Herstellers Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company Incorporated. Zwei Exemplare wurden für die U.S. Navy gebaut (BuAer. 6978 und 6979), eine weitere Maschine (BuAer. 7054) wurde vom US Army Air Service beauftragt. |

The R3C-1 was the landplane version and Cyrus Bettis won the Pulitzer Trophy Race in one on 12 October 1925 with a speed of 406 km/h.
The Schneider Trophy 1925 was held in Baltimore, US on 26 October.With 374 km/h, pilot Jimmy Doolittle won the trophy with a Curtiss R3C-2. The other two R3C-2s, piloted by George Cuddihy and Ralph Oftsie, did not reach the finish line.
The next day, with the same plane on a straight course, Doolittle reached 395 km/h, a new world record. For the next Schneider Trophy, which took place on 13 November 1926, the R3C-2's engine was further improved, and pilot Christian Franck Schilt won second place with 372 km/h.

Die R3C-1 war die Landversion mit der Cyrus Bettis am 12. Oktober 1925 das Pulitzer Trophy Air Race mit 406 km/h gewann. Die Schneider-Trophy 1925 fand am 26. Oktober in Baltimore, USA statt. Der Pilot James Doolittle des USAAC errang mit 374 km/h den ersten Platz. Die beiden anderen R3C-2 der US Navy, mit den Piloten George Cuddihy und Ralph Oftsie, erreichten das Ziel nicht. Am nächsten Tag flog Doolittle mit der Maschine auf einem geraden Kurs mit 395,4 km/h einen neuen Weltrekord. Zur nächsten Schneider-Trophy, die am 13. November 1926 stattfand, wurde der Motor weiter verbessert, und die R3C-2 erreichte mit Pilot Christian Franck Schilt mit 372 km/h den zweiten Platz. |
