The Grumman F4F Wildcat is an American carrier-based fighter aircraft that entered service in 1940 with the U.S. Navy. At the time, the U.S. Navy favored a monoplane design, the Brewster F2A-1, ordering production early in 1936. However, an order was also placed for Grumman's XF4F-1 as a backup in case the Brewster monoplane proved to be unsatisfactory.

It was clear to Grumman that the XF4F-1 would be inferior to the Brewster monoplane, so Grumman abandoned the XF4F-1, designing instead a new monoplane fighter. The XF4F-3 would retain the same, fuselage-mounted, hand-cranked main landing gear as the F3F, with its relatively narrow track. Grumman completely rebuilt the prototype with new wings and tail and a supercharged version of the Pratt & Whitney R-1830 "Twin Wasp" radial engine. Testing of the new XF4F-3 led to an order for F4F-3 production models, the first of which was completed in February 1940.

A total of 7,860 Wildcats were built during the war.

Die Grumman F4F Wildcat ist ein amerikanisches trägergestütztes Kampfflugzeug, das 1940 bei der U.S. Navy in Dienst gestellt wurde. Zu dieser Zeit bevorzugte die U.S. Navy einen Eindecker, die Brewster F2A-1, und gab die Produktion Anfang 1936 in Auftrag. Es wurde jedoch auch eine Bestellung für die XF4F-1 von Grumman aufge-geben, die als Reserve dienen sollte, falls sich der Brewster-Eindecker als unzureichend erweisen sollte.
Grumman war klar, dass die XF4F-1 dem Brewster Eindecker unterlegen sein würde, also gab Grumman die XF4F-1 auf und entwarf stattdessen ein neues Eindecker Jagdflugzeug. Die XF4F-3 sollte das gleiche, am Rumpf montierte, handge-kurbelte Hauptfahrwerk wie die F3F mit seiner relativ schmalen Spur beibehalten. Grumman baute den Prototyp komplett um und versah ihn mit neuen Tragflächen und einem aufgeladenen Sternmotor vom Typ Pratt & Whitney R-1830 "Twin Wasp". Die Erprobung der neuen XF4F-3 führte zu einer Bestellung von F4F-3 Produktionsmodellen, von denen das erste im Februar 1940 fertig gestellt wurde.
Insgesamt wurden im Laufe des Krieges 7.860 Wildcats gebaut.
