Based on the Bureau of Aeronautics design 106, the XSS-1 was a two seat amphibian which was ordered on 30 June 1931. The XSS-1 was to be powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-985. Following a mock-up inspection the design was altered in January 1932 to use the R-1340-D1 engine and redesignated as XSS-2. It was flown in April 1933 but the design proved to be poorly controllable and the aircraft was returned to Sikorsky for repairs and modifications. However, Sikorsky was not interested in further development and in December 1933 the aircraft was scrapped. |
Basierend auf dem Bureau of Aeronautics design 106, war die XSS-1 ein zweisitziges Amphibien-flugzeug das am 30. Juni 1931 bestellt wurde. Die XSS-1 wurde von einem Pratt & Whitney R-985 angetrieben. Nach einer Prüfung des Mock-ups im Januar 1932 wurde der Antrieb auf einen R-1340-D1 Motor geändert und in XSS-2 umbenannt. Der Erstflug war im April 1933, doch die Maschine erwies sich als schlecht steuerbar und wurde für Reparaturen und Änderungen an Sikorsky zurückgegeben. Allerdings war Sikorsky nicht an einer weitren Entwicklung interessiert, im Dezember 1933 wurde das Flugzeug erschrottet. |
