History

As the US Navy’s only Forward Deployed LAMPS squadron, the WARLORDS of Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light FIVE ONE (HSL-51) have been at the forefront of helicopter operations throughout the Pacific Ocean and Arabian Gulf since their establishment on 03 October 1991.

The WARLORDS embody the spirit and tenets of the Samurai warrior depicted on their unit insignia, Miyamoto Musashi. A famed and accomplished 16th century warrior, artist, sculptor, and calligrapher, Musashi was a master swordsman who created and perfected a two-sword kenjutsu technique called niten'ichi ("two heavens as one"). In this technique, the swordsman simultaneously uses both a large sword (katana) and a "companion sword" (wakazashi). In addition to his renowned skill as a swordsman, Musashi was also an expert in throwing weapons and was known for his straightforward approach to combat, with no additional frills or aesthetic considerations.

Like Musashi, the WARLORDS are master warfighters flying the Sikorsky SH-60B Seahawk helicopter from the decks of the USS KITTY HAWK (CV-63), USS COWPENS (CG-63), USS SHILOH (CG-67), USS LASSEN (DDG-82), USS MUSTIN (DDG-89), and USS McCAMPBELL (DDG-85). The WARLORDS also operate a VIP-configured Sikorsky SH-60F Seahawk detachment aboard the Seventh Fleet command ship, USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19). The WARLORDS are equally skilled with their weapons – the AGM-114 Hellfire missile, the MK-46 and MK-50 torpedoes, and the GAU-16 and M-60D crew served weapons. Should the need arise, the WARLORDS stand ready to preserve freedom and democracy and strike the enemy swiftly, relentlessly, and with deadly accuracy.

Serving aboard the Yokosuka-based ships of CARRIER STRIKE GROUP FIVE and DESTROYER SQUADRON FIFTEEN, the WARLORDS have amassed over 95,000 mishap-free flight hours and set the standard for operational excellence. In fifteen years of existence, HSL-51 has earned seven Battle Efficiency Awards, five Arnold J. Isbell Awards for Undersea Warfare Excellence, five CNO Safety “S” Awards, and five Maintenance Excellence Awards. Excellence, humility, vigilance and teamwork are the governing credos by which the Samarai and the WARLORDS live and operate.
