Curtiss' Model 43 was their first aircraft designed expressly for the Navy, rather than a modified Army type. While clearly a descendant of the P-1 Hawk, its wings were constant-chord rather than tapered, and the upper wing had a slight sweepback. The engine was a 450 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1340-B Wasp radial. Entirely fabric-covered, the top wing was framed with spruce, while the fuselage was built from a combination of aluminum and steel tubing, sufficiently strong to serve as a dive bomber as well as a fighter.

Das Curtiss Modell 43 war das erste Flugzeug ausdrücklich für die Marine entwickelt wurde, anstelle eines modifizierten Army Maschine. Als ein Abkömmling der P-1 Hawk hatte die Maschine einen Flügel mit konstanter Breite, und der obere Flügel hatte eine leichte Pfeilung. Der Motor war ein 450 PS Pratt & Whitney R-1340-B Wasp Sternmotorl. Die obere Tragfläche bestand aus Fichtenholz mit einer Stoffbespannung, der Rumpf bestand aus einer Kombination von Aluminium und Stahlrohr, die stark genug waren um als Sturzkampfbomber sowie als Jäger dienen zu können.

Operational history

17 production aircraft F7C-1 Seahawks were built, and entered service in the USMC's VF-5M at Quantico. In 1930 VF-9M organized the Marine's first aerobatic stunt team, "The Red Devils", with F7Cs featuring red painted noses. They continued in service until 1933.

17 Serienmaschinen der F7C-1 Seahawks wurden gebaut und in Dienst der USMC Staffel VF-5M in Quantico gestellt. 1930 organisierte die Staffel VF-9M der Marine das erste Kunstflug-Team  "Die roten Teufel", mit F7Cs mit rot lackierten Nasen. Sie waren bis 1933 im Dienst.
