History

Marine Scout Bomber Squadron 464 (VMSB-464) was activated on 15. April 1944 at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California to train personnel. Their status changed in October of that year as they were designated a replacement training squadron. They were redesignated Marine Torpedo Bombing Squadron 464 (VMTB-464) on 1. June 1945. Following the surrender of Japan the squadron was deactivated as part of the general draw down of all US forces on 10. March 1946.

In 1981, HMH-464 was reactivated at New River, North Carolina, as one of the new CH-53E "Super Stallion" squadrons and assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic. Reassigned during February 1983 to Marine Aircraft Group 29. During the next 10 years HMH-464 supported East Coast MEU deployments, as well as commitments at home. During Operation Desert Shield/Storm, HMH-464 was deployed to Kuwait with MAG-26.

More recently, HMH-464 has deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and has deployed detachments to Somalia in support of JTF Horn of Africa.
