The Curtiss SO3C Seamew was intended as a replacement for the SOC Seagull as the U.S. Navy's standard floatplane scout. Entering service in 1942, the type suffered a variety of problems, primarily with the Ranger XV-770 engine which was a dismal failure, and was withdrawn by 1944. Among its many flaws, part of the vertical tail was attached to the sliding aft canopy, compromising the aircraft's stability when the aft canopy was in the open position, which it often needed to be for spotting. The unsatisfactory performance of the SO3C-1 in the U.S. Navy led to their withdrawal from first-line service. Many were converted for use as radio-controlled targets under the designation SO3C-1K. |

Die Curtiss SO3C Seamew war als Ersatz für die SOC Seagull als Standard Wasserflugzeug der U.S. Navy gedacht. Ab 1942 im Dienst litt die Maschine unter vielen Problemen vor allem mit dem Ranger XV-770-Motor und war ein Fiasko. Die Maschine wurde 1944 zurückgezogen. Unter den vielen Fehlern war auch, das ein Teil des Seitenleitwerkes am Beobachtercockpit befestigt war und bei offenem Zustand zur Instabilität der Maschine führte. Die unbefriedigenden Leistungen der SO3C-1 in der U.S. Navy führte zu dessen Rückzug aus dem Frontdienst. Viele wurden für den Einsatz als Funk-Ziele unter der Bezeichnung SO3C-1K umgewandelt. |

A number of the SO3C-1s, a fixed undercarriage version, were ordered by the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm under the terms of Lend-Lease. In Royal Navy service the SO3C-1 was given the designation "Seamew". Crews gave it the name "Sea Cow". Deliveries to the Fleet Air Arm started in January 1944. 250 Seamews were allocated and some 100 actually delivered, the last batch was refused in favour of additional Vought Kingfishers. It was declared obsolete in September 1944 and completely removed from service in 1945. |

Einige der SO3C-1, eine Version mit festem Fahrwerk, wurden von der Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm im Rahmen von Lend-Lease bestellt. Im Dienst der Royal Navy erhielt die SO3C-1 die Bezeichnung "Seamew". Crews gaben ihm den Namen "Seekuh". Die Lieferungen an die Fleet Air Arm begannen im Januar 1944. 250 Seamews wurden zugeteilt und etwa 100 tatsächlich geliefert, die letzte Charge wurde zugunsten zusätzlicher Vought Kingfishers abgelehnt. Sie wurde im September 1944 für veraltet erklärt und 1945 vollständig ausser Dienst gestellt. |
