History

1700 NAS formed at RNAS Lee-on-Solent on 1 November 1944 as a amphibian bomber reconnaissance squadron with 6 Sea Otters. Embarking in HMS Khedive in January 1945, the squadron sailed for Southern India, disembarking to RNAS Sulur in February where Walruss were als received, as the Sea Otter had not been cleared for deck landing at that time.
Moving to Ceylon, aircraft were embarked in small numbers in various escort carriers for air sea rescue and minesweeping operations. Some were embarked in HMS Hunter and HMS Stalker during an antishipping sweep in the Andaman Sea during June and another detachment was in HMS Emperor during operatlons at Car Nicobar in July. Further detachments were in HMS Ameer and HMS Emperor later that month during minesweeping operations off PIhuket Island, Thailand. After VJ-Day the squadron was largely based ashore, 'A' Flight operating 6 Sea Otters at Trincomalee from November, whilst 'B' Flight and 6 Walruses at Katukurunda. 'C' Flight operated at times from Sembawang, and a small number of Swordfish were als flown at this stage. On 3. June 1946 1700 NAS was absorbed in 733 NAS at RNAS Trincomalee.
