History
|
1943
- 1945
1830 NAS personnel assembled at RNAS Lee-on-Solent on 1. April 1943
and embarked for the USA, disembarking to NAS Quonset Point, Rhode
Island on 7. May, where it officially formed on 1. June 1943 as a
single seater fighter squadron. Equipped with 10 Corsair Is for
work-up, these gave way in August to 10 Corsair IIs, which in
October embarked in HMS Slinger for passage to the UK. In December
the strenght was increased to fourteen aircraft by absorbing part of
1831 NAS, and 1830 NAS then became part of
the 15th Naval Fighter Wing. The following month it joined HMS
Illustrious for work-up in the Clyde, sailing in late January 1944
for Ceylon, from where as part of the Eastem Fleet a three day sweep
was carried out in the Bay of Bengal in March 1944. In April attacks
were made on shore installations and shipping at Sabang, and the
next month similar operations were carried out at Sourabaya. The
Andanan Islands were attacked in June, followed by futher Operations
at Sabang in July 1944.
In August the HMS Illustrious sailed to Durban to reflt, and 1830
NAS increased its strength to 18 aircraft. By December the ship was
back in action, and 1830 NAS participated in attacks on oil
refineries in Sumatra in December 1944 and January 1945, following
vwich the ship joined the British Pacific Fleet. Intensive
operations were carried out in March and April against the Sakishima
Gunto group of islands in the East China Seas but, after being
damaged from a near miss by a Kamikaze, the ship pulled out of the
line on 14. April and returned with 1830 NAS to the UK. were the
squadron was to have regrouped with new Corsairs before returing to
the British Pacific Fleet as part of the 6th Carrier Air Group, but
instead it disbanded on arrival in the UK on 28. July 1945. |
1947 - 1957
1830 NAS reformed at RNAS
Abbotsinch, Renfrewshire, Scotland
on 15. August 1947 as a fighter/anti-submarine squadron in the RN
Volunteer Reserve, equipped initially wlth 3 Seafire F.XVIIS
and 3 Firefly Is. In May 1948 the fighter role was dropped and 1830
NAS standardised on Fireflies. During August and September 1949
these joined HMS Illustrious for the squadron's first period of
embarkation duing annual training, and it susequently received the
annual Boyd Trophy award for completing 205 accident-free deck
landings. The squadron moved temporarity to RNAS Donibristle in
December 1950 to enable the
RNAS Abbotsinch runways to be reconstructed. Firefly AS.6s
arrived in 1951, and on 1. June 1952 the Scottish Air Division was
formed to control 1830 NAS and its offshoot 1830A NAS which later
became 1843 NAS. Returning to
RNAS Abbotsinch on 1.
November 1952, some Firefly FR-5s were received in 1953, but in
November 1955 the squadron re-equipped with Avengers, only to
disband on 10. March 1957 as part of the defence cuts that year. |
