History

1944 - 1945
1842 NAS assembled at NAD Townhill Canp in Februry 1944, and after taking passage to the USA fflcially formed at NAS Bruswick, Maine on 1. April 1944 as a single seater fighter squadron. Equipped with 18 Corsirs IIIs, these gave way to Corsair IIs after arrival in the United Kingdom in HMS Rajah in June 1944. In September, 1842 NAS joined the 6th Naval Fighter Wing in HMS Formidable, and during August lost several aircraft during attacks on the German battleship Tirpitz, then lying in an Norwegian Fjord. The HMS Formidable then sailed for the Far East, but was delayed in the Mediterranean, and the squadron spent a period ashore, being split between Gibraltar and Dekheila.
Continuing east in January 1945, it re-equipped in March 1945 with 18 Corsair IVs, with which it participated in operations against the Sakishima Gunto group of islands in the Fast China Seas during April and May. The Wing was merged into the 2nd CAG in June. During the last few weeks of the war strikes were carried out in the Tokyo area, two pilots being fortunate to be picked up by a U.S. submarine when on 28. July they had to ditch inside a Japanese harbour. The carrier then withdrew to Australia, where 1841 NAS left its aircraft, and the pilots retuned ln HMS Victorious to the UK, where the squadron disbanded on arrival on 31. October 1945.

1952 - 1957
On 1 October 1952, 1840A NAS formed at RNAS Ford as an Anti-Subnarine squadron in the Channel Air Division of the RN Volunteer Reserve, becoming 1842 NAS on 28. March 1953. Aircraft were pooled with 1840 NAS. The squadron disbanded at RNAS Ford on 10. March 1957 in the defence cuts of that vear.
