1850
Squadron formed at Brunswick on 1. August 1944 as a single seater
fighter squadron. Equipped with 18 Corsair IVs, it sailed for the UK
in HMS Raper in Novenber, absorbing part of the disbanded 1849 NAS
on arrival to increase the strength to 24 aircraft. After work-up
and deck landing practice in HMS Venerable in February 1945, the
squadron joined HMS Vengeance for the British Pacific Fleet. After
weapon training and dive bombing practlce in southern India, during
which the squadron became part of the 13th Carrier Air Group, it
re-embarked and the ship entered the war zone in August, but was too
late to take an active part. 1850 NAS remained in the area for some
time, reducing to 12 aircraft in October 1945, but in June 1946
returned to the UK, where it disbanded on arrival at Gosport on 12.
August 1946.
The
number was earmarked in 1953 for a postwar RN Volunteer Reserve
squadron, but this became 1843 NAS instead.
