History

1936 - 1940
No.711 (Catapult) Flight formed on 15. July 1936 from part of No.447 (Catapult) Flight for use on ships of the 1st Crusier Squadron. This formed part of the Mediterranean Fleet, and RAF Kalafrana, Malta was used by the squadron as a shore base. Aircraft were initially Ospreys, which were embarked in HMS London, HMS Devonshire, HMS Shropshire and HMS Essex. Walruses soon arrived as replacenents, and at the outbreak of war their shore base was changed RNAS Aboukir, Egypt.
By this time the parent uil had become 711 NAS (Catapult), but it lost its identity when it was absorbed lnto 700 NAS on 21. January 1940.

1944 - 1945
On 9. Septenber 1944, 711 NAS reformed at RNAS Crail as Torpedo Training squadron. Equipped with Barracudas, these were partially replaced in August 1945 by Avengers, and this element of the unit operated as an Avenger Operational Training Unit.
With the ending of hostilities, there was a reduced requirement for its task, and 711 NAS disbanded at RNAS Crail on 21. December 1945, its remnants being absorbed by 785 NAS.
