1936 - 1940
No. 712 (Catapult) Flight
formed on 15. July 1936 by
renumbering No.407 (Catapult)
Flight, for service in ships of the 2nd Cruiser Squadron in the Home
Fleet. Equipment was initially Opreys, these being enbarked in HMS
Leander, HMS Neptue and HMS Orion, with a shore base at RAF Mount
Batten, Devon. With the arrival of Walruses in April 1937, aircaft
in these ships became the responsibility of 718
NAS, and No. 712 Flight took over instead the requirement for
HMS Glasgow, HMS Newcastle, HMS Sheffield and HMS Southanpton, which
all commissioned during 1937.
The shore base was changed to RNAS Lee-on-Solent on 1. Janury 1938,
by which time No. 712 (Catapult) Flight had achieved squadron status.
At this time HMS Cornwall was added to its charges, but this ship
was relinquished when it sailed to join the China Station in March
1939, to be replaced by HMS Cumberland. On the outbreak of war the
squadronr's responsibility was changed to the 18th Cruiser Squadron
and the Humber Force, and it then all had control of aircraft in HMS
Belfast, HMS Edinbugh, HMS Norfolk and HMS Suffolk, at which tine it
had 18 Walruss operating fron 9 cruiers.
The squadron reverted to the 2nd Crusier Squadron by the end of the
year, but lost its identity when on 21. January 1940 all the
catapult squadrons were combined to form 700 NAS
1944 - 1945
0n 2. August 1944, 712 NAS reformed at RNAS Hatston as a
communications squadron out of "B" Flight 771 NAS.
It operated a miscellany of communications aircraft including
Expeditors, Dominies, Sea Otters and Travellers until disbanding at
RNAS Hatston on 23. August 1945.
