History
|
1936 - 1940
No. 715 (Catapult)
Flight forned on 15. July 1936 by renumbering No.403 (Catapult)
Flight in ships of the 5th Crusier Squadron in the China Station.
The shore base was at RAF Kai Tak, with Wei-Hai-Wéi in Northern
China being also being used. Initial equipment was Ospreys in HMS
Berwick, HMS Dorstshire and HMS Kent, but in September 1936 these
began to give way to Walruses. HMS Berwick was withdrawn, but the
squadron took over responsibllity for aircaft in HMS Birmingham, HMS
Cornwall, HMS Cumberland, HMS Kent and HMS Suffolk. It achieved
squadron status by early 1938, and at the outbreak of war had 7
Walruses in 5 cruisers, using both RAF Kai Tak and RNAS Seletar as
shore bases. 715 NAS disbanded into 700 NAS on 21. January 1940.
1944 - 1946
On 17. August 1944, part of 736 NAS at RNAS St Merrin broke away to
refom as 715 NAS within the School of Air Combat. Equipped mainly
with Seafires and Corsairs it operated a Fighter Air Combat Course
and also a Fighter Leaders Course until being reabsorbed by 736 NAS
on 31. March 1946.
