History

1942 - 1954
No. 766 NAS was originally to have formed at RNAS Lee-on-Solent in 1939 as a Seaplane School and pool, but after several postpnements this plan was abandoned. Instead it fomed at RAF Machrihanish on 15. April 1942 as a Night ALT Course equipped with Swordfish. On 7. July 1943 it moved to RNAS Inskip to becone part of No.1 Naval Operational Training Unit, and by May 1944 was operating 31 Swordfish, including 3 used by a photographic Flight. In October 1944 Fireflies arrived, initial equipment being 14 aircraft given up by by 1772 NAS.
766 NAS moved to RNAS Rattray on 20 January 1946, and then to RNAS Lossiemouth on 4 August 1946 where it also received Seafires, becoming Part I of the Operational Flying School course. A few Sea Fury T.20s arrived on September 1951, there being given up ten months later. On 3 Otober 1953 the squadron moved to RNAS Culdrose, where it disbanded on 25. November 1954.

1955 - 1970
On 18. October 1955 766 NAS reforned at RNAS Yeovilton from 890 NAS as an All Weather Fighter pool, equipped with 8 Sea Venoms. Owing to reconstruction of the RNAS Yeovilton runways it moved out to RNAS Merryfield on 24 November 1956. From October 1957 it operated as a Naval All Weather Fighter School, taking over the task of training naval pilots and observers in this work previously performed by No.238 Operational Conversion Unit at RAF North Luffenham. Moving back to RNAS Yeovilton on 20. January 1958, it became the All Weather Fighter Training Squadron in May 1959. Sea Vixens FAW.1s arrived in October 1959, and thes were designated No. 766B Squadron until the remaining Sea Venom fjnally left on 24 October 1960. Sea Vixen FAW.2s began to arrive in July 1965, but the last of the FAW.Is did not depart until May 1968. The squadron disbanded at Yeovilton on 10 December 1970, its task and aircraft going to 890 NAS.
