History
|
The
squadron officially formed for the first time at Palisadoes, Jamaica
in May 1942 as a torpedo bomber reconnaissance Swordfish squadron,
subsequently embarking on HMS Dasher in July 1942 from Floyd Bennett
Field, USA for the UK.
In January 1943 the squadron formed 2 flights, one to HMS Argus for
Gibraltar convoy duties and the other to HMS Dasher to Iceland,
re-assembling at Dunino in late March, subsequently disbanding in
June 1943. |
In September 1944 the
squadron reformed with 16 Barracuda IIs at RNAS Lee-on-Solent.
In April 1945 the squadron embarked on HMS Glory for the British
Pacific Fleet, becoming part of the 16th Carrier Air Group but saw
no action before VJ-Day, sailing for Rabaul in case of trouble
during the Japanese surrender. The squadron not returning to the UK
until October 1947.
