History 

In March 1944, the squadron formed at NAS Squantum, USA as a torpedo bomber reconnaissance Avenger squadron, and subsequently embarked on HMS Smiter arriving at RAF Machrihanish in June 1944, and subsequently based at RNAS Maydown and RNAS Eglington before embarked detachments on HMS Nabob and HMS Trumpeter as well as a detachment at RNAS Hatston.
In September 1944 the squadron embarked on HMS Premier for operations off the Norwegian coast till March 1945, its fighter flight of 8 Wildcat VIs being briefly detached to HMS Trumpeter. In April and May 1945 the squadron took part in Arctic Russia convoy duties onboard HMS Premier, and after VE Day was intended for the 10th Carrier Air Group but was disbanded in June 1945
