History

The squadron was formed at RNAS Donibristle in November 1941 as a Fleet Fighter squadron with 6 Fulmar IIs, soon moving to RNAS St Merryn and RNAS Yeovilton.
The squadron was allocated to HMS Biter, but first was attached to No 13 Group at Turnhouse, and from July, No 14 Group RAF at Peterhead, back to No 13 Group in the middle of the month, then subsequently embarked on HMS Victorious in July 1942 for Malta convoy duties, returning to Lee-on-Solent in August 1942.
The squadron re-embarked on HMS Victorious in October 1942 and took part in the November landings in North Africa, and subsequently on its return to the UK again joined No 14 Group RAF Fighter Command at first at Skeabrae and then No 13 Group at Turnhouse, Machrihanish and Drem until mid July 1943, finally disbanding at RAF Machrihanish towards the end of July 1943.
