The type designation Dornier
Do-28 comprises two different twin-engine STOL utility aircraft, the Do-28A/B (1959) and Do-28D Skyservant (1966) , manufactured by Dornier
Flugzeugbau GmbH. |

Dornier Do-28A/B
The Do-28 was developed from the single-engine Do-27 at the end of the
1950s. The design shared the high-wing cantilever layout and the lift
augmentation devices of the Do-27, together with the rear fuselage which
seated six passengers.
The defining feature of the new design was the unusual incorporation of
two Lycoming engines, as well as the two main landing gear shock struts
of the faired main landing gear attached to short pylons on either side
of the forward fuselage. The internal space of the Do-28 was the same as
the Do-27. |

Dornier Do-28A/B
Die Do-28 wurde Ende der 1950er Jahre aus der einmotorigen Do-27 entwickelt.
Das Design teilte sich das Hochdecker-Ausleger und die
Auftriebserhöhungsvorrichtungen der Do-27 zusammen mit dem hinteren Rumpf,
der sechs Passagiere Platz bot.
Das charakteristische Merkmal des neuen Designs war der ungewöhnliche Einbau
von zwei Lycoming-Triebwerken sowie den beiden Hauptfahrwerk-streben des
verkleideten Hauptfahrwerks, die an kurzen Pylonen auf beiden Seiten des
vorderen Rumpfes befestigt waren. Der Innenraum der Do-28 war der gleiche
wie der der Do-27. |

The main task of Air America’s Do-28s seems to have been communications
flights and to
transport small goods to outlaying villages in Laos. Later, those Do-28s
which were based in
South Vietnam and at Bangkok seem to have been used for the same type of
missions.
Although USAID was officially the main contractor to Air America in
South Vietnam, all
CIA missions in South Vietnam were flown as part of the USAID contracts,
and within those
contracts, all CIA requirements were handled with priority. |

Die Hauptaufgabe der Do-28 von
Air America scheinen Kommunikationsflüge und der Transport von Kleingütern
in lohnende Dörfer in Laos gewesen zu sein. Später scheinen die Do-28, die
in Südvietnam und in Bangkok stationiert waren, für die gleiche Art von
Missionen verwendet worden zu sein. Obwohl USAID offiziell der
Hauptauftrag-nehmer von Air America in Südvietnam war, wurden alle
CIA-Missionen in Südvietnam im Rahmen der USAID-Verträge geflogen, und
innerhalb dieser Verträge wurden alle CIA-Anforderungen vorrangig behandelt.
