Schiphol or The Luchthaven Schiphol is the commercial airport in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. With approximately 49.8 million passengers (as of 2011) he is the fourth largest airport in Europe. Schiphol serves as a hub for domestic airlines KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines NV), Martinair, Transavia and Arkefly.

The word Schiphol means something like "Ship hole" and is due to the fact that in the past at the site of today's airport was a big lake, where ships often sank. By 1935 the airport had four paved runways. Today, Schiphol has five runways. Polderbaan-Runway 18R/36L is the longest one at a length of 3’400 m. With an average height of about three meters below sea level, it is the lowest airport in Europe. 

Schiphol is of international significance for air traffic and has numerous European and intercontinental passenger and cargo movements. Many airlines, including KLM which is the home carrier, connect Amsterdam with worldwide destinations.
