In
the European ranking, Madrid-Barajas airport is behind London Heathrow,
Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt and Amsterdam, the fifth largest
airport in Europe. The “Aeropuerto Barajas” was designed by architect
Luis Gutiérrez Soto and the engineer Marqués de los Álamos. Construction
began in 1928.
On 22nd April 1931, the airport was officially put into operation. In
1933, the former postal service LAPE (Lineas Aéreas Postales Espanolas)
took the first commercial flight to Barcelona. In the same year, the
first international flights took place at Madrid-Barajas. In 1944 the
first paved runway was built with a length of 1400 meters and a width of
48 meters and put into operation.
The airport was considered the most
modern in Europe. In 1954, the first Lockheed Super Constellation of
Iberia flew for the first time to
New
York.The number of passengers served by Barajas has risen steadily since
the renovation in 1970. In 1960 there were 900,000 passengers, while
already in 2007 the 50-million mark was exceeded.
As part of the expansion of the airport with its new terminal T4, two
more parallel runways were built next to the existing ones and put into
operation in 2006. Thus, the airport now has four runways; it will be
ready to cope with a capacity of 70 million passengers per year. |
