A good old friend drew my attention to the museum in Savigny Lès Beaune. Normally aviation museums are situated on active or or former airfields. This is completely different with this museum, which is situated in the small village of Savigny Lès Beaune, in the middle of wineyards.

The Museum

The museum has specialised on fighter aircraft since the Second World War. Quite a big number of these aircraft are practically standing in the garden. Behind the castle they are displayed on terraced ground at different levels that were formerly used for planting the grapes. The biggest part is situated on a gravel surface that is unfortunately surrounded by a high fence. The machines on the upper terraces are freely accessible.

A big drawback is of course the display in the open. The machines are exposed to the elements and the sun and it really shows. The colours are bleached out and in some cases gone altogether. Especially dark colours have suffered and these look completely different than when they were in service. A few machines received new paint schemes, but not all of them authentic, as for example a French Crusader is painted up as an aircraft of U.S. Navy Squadron VF-162.

The Castle

The castle is also worth visiting. The lower floors are furnished in a medieval stile. On the upper floors there are hundreds of showcases with thousands of aircraft models, an exhibition that is quite unique. Besides that there is a collection of cars and motorcycles, especially Fiat Abarth models and racing cars.

Altogether this is an attractive museum with several different topics that is well worth a visit.
