The design was approved on 16 December 1948 by a contract for the procurement of two XF4D-1 prototypes. The first flew on 23 January 1951 with an Allison J35-A-17 (2,270 kp), but this was a stopgap solution as the planned Westinghouse J40 had been delayed. Later, both prototypes were fitted with XJ40-WE-6 (3,175 kp) and XJ40-WE-8 (5,265 kp with afterburner) engines, respectively. Persistent problems with this type of engine ultimately led to the decision to convert the aircraft to the now proven Pratt & Whitney J57.
The model went into production as the F4D-1 Skyray. It was a cantilever mid-wing aircraft with a delta wing and elevon control. The delta wings had rounded wingtips, and large air intakes for the engine were located close to the fuselage. Fuel was stored in the wings and in the deep fuselage. The vertical stabiliser was swept, and the pilot sat well forward of the wing, giving him good all-round visibility. The Skyray was armed with four 20 mm cannons. In addition, up to 1,500 kg of external loads could be carried on six underwing stations, including two AIM-9 Sidewinder guided missiles.

Der Entwurf wurde am 16. Dezember 1948 durch einen Vertrag über die Beschaffung von zwei Prototypen XF4D-1 genehmigt. Der erste flog am 23. Januar 1951 mit Allison J35-A-17 (2.270kp), was aber eine Notlösung war, da sich das vorgesehene Westinghouse J40 verzögert hatte. Später erhielten beide Prototypen XJ40-WE-6 (3.175kp) bzw. XJ40-WE-8 (5.265kp mit Nachbrenner). Anhaltende Probleme mit diesem Triebwerkstyp führten schließlich zum Entschluss, die Maschinen auf das inzwischen bewährte Pratt & Whitney J57 umzurüsten.

Das Muster ging als F4D-1 Skyray in Serie. Sie war ein freitragender Mitteldecker mit einem Deltaflügel mit Elevon-Steuerung. Die Deltaflügel hatten gerundete Flügelspitzen, dicht am Rumpf waren große Lufteintritte für das Triebwerk. Der Treibstoff wurde in den Tragflächen und im tiefen Rumpf gelagert. Das Seitenleitwerk war gepfeilt, der Pilot saß weit vor dem Flügel und hatte damit eine gute Rundumsicht. Bewaffnet war die Skyray mit vier 20 mm-Kanonen. Ferner konnten bis zu 1500 kg an Außenlasten an sechs Unterflügelstationen mitgeführt werden, u.a. zwei AIM-9 Sidewinder-Lenkraketen.

The Douglas Skyray was in use by the U.S. Navy and the Marines from 1956 to 1964 The Skyray was as a carrierborne day fighter and an all-weather figher by the US Marines.
