After a
three hours ride, we arrived in Hahn and went to the Western approach
area to a large sandy hill. This photo opportunity was extremely well
and is on the site of the former Hahn Air Base and was operated during
the Cold War by the U.S. Air Force (Base of the 50th Fighter Wing).
From far away we could see a Boeing 747 of Air Cargo Germany. Unfortunately,
too far away to take pictures. We knew already this afternoon, that
RYANAIR are number one at Hahn-Airport. But there were others as WIZZAIR
Airlines, Atlas Air, Air Cargo Germany and some others that use Hahn as
a hub.
Nevertheless, the afternoon was rather monotonous with most movements by
Ryanair. In the late afternoon we went to the hotel at the airport. The
lady at the desk looked at us and knew right away that we were spotters
and gave us each a room on the top floor overlooking the airport and
tarmac. So we had a little rest and then drove to a nice place for
dinner that was recommended to us by the charming lady at hotel check-in
desk.
Back at the hotel I got myself another beer and sat in the hotel room by
the window to watch the traffic at the tarmac. Finally momentum came in
to flight operations lasting almost the whole night.
Until midnight, all eleven in Hahn based Ryanair aircrafts returned and
parked on the apron. I do not know where yet more aircraft space will be
available, but apparently that was no problem. From midnight, we went to
go well with the cargo operations. Almost every minute landed and took
off a Boeing 747, Boeing 777, A330, etc. flying all over the world, but
just at night and in poor light conditions to do some photos. So there
was a lot for the eyes to see, but unfortunately not for our cameras. |

After a short night sleep, I got
up about five clock in the morning and went up the top deck of the adjacent
car park, enjoying the first sun rays of a spotter day.
Within a short time, all eleven aircrafts of Ryanair left Hahn to their
destinations and the "Rush our" was just over, but also with a few great
shots for my archives.
As Francois, well rested, arrived at the parking lot deck all the action was
gone at the airport. So we decided to drive home to Basel. On our trip to
Basel we made a brief stop at Baden-Baden Airpark and of course at Belvedere
photo point at the Euro Airport Basel, where we saw all of our spotter
colleagues again.
A successful weekend of
Pentecost at two airports with little traffic but quite a few interesting
highlights. Especially the Airport Hahn we will certainly visit again, but
then I hope for great night shots from the opposite side and in combination
with the Frankfurt Rhein-Main Airport. |
